Aladdin' rides high in Europe

HOLLYWOOD -- 'Aladdin' dethroned 'Jurassic Park' as the leader of the European box office with $4 million at 358 screens for the week ended Nov. 26, it was reported Monday.

Disney's animated cartoon, which has amassed close to $220 million in the United States and $100 million in overseas markets, topped the market in Sweden and finished second in Germany, Daily Variety said. 'Aladdin' also set opening records in Denmark and Spain and posted strong results in London and Austria.

The overall results were held back by freezing temperatures and heavy snow across much of the continent, along with the telecast of a key World Cup soccer game between France and Bulgaria.

'Rising Sun' finished second with $3.8 million at 803 screens, giving it $14.4 million after six weeks in Europe, while 'Jurassic Park' followed with $3.4 million at 1,074 screens.

'Jurassic Park' led in France in its fifth week and has now topped $517 million in overseas grosses after five months in release, including $215 million from the six major European markets. Its domestic gross has gone to $331 million, the second highest of all time after 'E.T. -- The Extraterrestrial.'

'Sleepless in Seattle' was fourth with $2.6 million on 664 screens, giving it $28 million after 10 weeks. It was followed by 'The House of Spirits,' which had been dominating the German market but was nearly edged by 'Aladdin,' with $2.3 million at 425 screens.

'Hard Target' came in sixth with $2.1 million at 410 screens, placing second in France. 'Demolition Man' was a close seventh at $2 million on 317 screens as it led in the United Kingdom in its second week. The sci-fi actioner has topped $52 million in the United States in since opening in early October.

'The Firm' finished eighth with $1.8 million at 669 screens, giving it $40 million in Europe. It was followed by 'In the Line of Fire' with $1.7 million at 525 screens and 'Dave' with $1.5 million at 381 screens.
