NEW YORK -- NBC's 'Seinfeld' continued to move toward the top of TV ratings list last week, challenging such old favorites as 'Home Improvement' and '60 Minutes,' the A. C. Nielsen Co. reported.
Jerry Seinfeld's quirky New York sitcom landed in third place on the Nielsen Top 10 list, up from fourth place the previous week and tenth place the week before that. It leapfrogged 'Roseanne' which retreated from second to fourth place for the week ending Nov. 7. As recently as the week ending Oct. 24, 'Roseanne' was No. 1.
Also making a good showing were two of the season's new shows, NBC's 'Frasier' and ABC's 'Grace Under Fire' in fifth and sixth places respectively. They were the only first season shows even making the Top 20 list.
'Ghost,' the movie that won Whoopi Goldberg an Oscar and revived the career of Patrick Swayze, was the only movie on the Top 10 list, taking the No. 8 place for CBS, which aired it Sunday night.
Sports grabbed the No. 10 spot for ABC in the form of the NFL Monday night football game between Washington and Buffalo.
ABC crowded out CBS from the dominant network spot with a 12.9 rating and 20 percent share of the viewing audience for the week. ABC took five of the Top 10 spots.
CBS was in second place with 12.3-20 and NBC trailed with 12-19. Fox made a showing with 7.2-12 with only 15 hours of prime time programming compared with the other networks' 22 hours.
ABC was the viewing audience's favorite on Monday, Tuesday and Friday. CBS got Saturday and Sunday and NBC Wednesday and Thursday.
ABC took top honors, as usual, for the nightly news, with NBC second and CBS third. The ratings were ABC 10.9-20, a point off the previous week. NBC rated 9-18 and CBS 9.7-18.
Each ratings point represents about 942,000 households. A share is the percentage of TV sets in use that are tuned into a particular show or network.NEWLN: ------
