CHICAGO -- The Chicago Blackhawks tradeddisgruntled right winger Steve Larmer, a mainstay on the Hawks for the past decade and holder of several team records, to the Hartford Whalers Tuesday in a four-player deal.
Larmer and defenseman Bryan Marchment were sent packing to Hartford in exchange for 20-year-old left winger Patrick Poulin and defensemen Eric Weinrich.
Immediately following the deal, the Whalers traded Larmer to the New York Rangers.
Larmer, 32, was originally the Blackhawks' sixth round selection in the 1980 draft, and by 1982 had worked his way into the lineup. He was named National Hockey League rookie of the year that season after scoring 43 goals and adding 47 assists.
That season also began a streak of 884 consecutive games played for Larmer, a Blackhawk record and third in NHL history.
Larmer also holds the Blackhawk record for most points in a season by a right winger, and most goals and assists in a season by a right winger.
Among team lifetime leaders, Larmer ranks third in goals, fourth in points and fifth in assists. He was a two-time NHL All-Star.
Larmer had yet to lace-up the skates this year though, sitting out in a contract dispute with management. He did not hide his desire to be traded to a team that would pay him more.
Marchment, 24, was acquired by the Hawks in 1991, and quickly became known as an enforcer. He led the team in penalty minutes last year with 313.
Meanwhile, Poulin appears to be a blossoming young star. Last season, his first full one in the NHL, Poulin scored 20 goals and added 31 assists for the Whalers.
Weinrich, 26, a six-year NHL veteran, scored seven goals and added 29 assists in 79 games last year for the Whalers.
So far this season has has played in eight games for Hartford and scored one goal.
