SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Kevin McDougal threw two touchdown passes and Jeff Burris and Marc Edwards scored on short touchdown runs Saturday to lead third-rated Notre Dame to a 36-14 victory over Michigan State.
McDougal completed 17 of 23 passes for 185 yards, including a 4-yard touchdown pass to Ray Zellars in the second quarter and a 12-yard scoring strike to Lee Becton in the fourth.
Notre Dame, which upset Michigan last week, improved to 3-0 and Michigan State fell to 1-1. The Fighting Irish have won the last seven meetings with Michigan State.
The touchdown by Zellers came with 10 seconds left in the second quarter and gave the Fighting Irish a 16-7 halftime lead. Burris scored on a two-yard run in the second quarter and Edwards had a one-yard touchdown run in the third.
Kevin Pendergast kicked field goals of 26, 25 and 31 yards.
Michigan State led 7-0 when Craig Thomas capped a 14-play drive with a one-yard run midway through the first quarter. The other Spartan score came on a five-yard pass from Jim Miller to Mill Coleman with 14 seconds left.
