GARLAND, Texas -- Police search teams joined by volunteers Monday combed a large wooded area in Garland near Dallas for a missing 8-year-old autistic boy who apparently wandered away from his home.
Kim Nguyen, whose parents moved to the United States from Vietnam in 1981, woke up Sunday morning and went to watch television.
But when his father checked on him about 7 a.m., the child was gone.
Kim has not been seen since.
All day Sunday, police, members of the Garland Emergency Corp. and dozens of concerned neighbors combed the area for Kim but could not locate him.
Rudolph Nguyen, the child's father, says the child can understand English but because of his handicap, he often refuses to speak to anyone.
The father, recalling his son's habits, said, 'When he was hungry, he would take my hand and lead me to the refrigerator to get him something to eat. I am really worried about him. I just hope no one gets him.'
Authorities were growing concerned because the boy may not respond when his name is called out. They were also worried about the effect of the intense 90-degree temperatures recorded at this time of year.
