LOS ANGELES -- Paul Whaley, drummer of the San Francisco-based psychedelic band Blue Cheer, has died of an apparent heart attack, a family friend said Wednesday.
He was 40.
Whaley, whose real name was Howard Walls, was found dead Sunday in his Los Angeles home.
Peter Palmiere said Whaley was found about 2 p.m. by his girlfriend who called paramedics. He was pronounced dead a short time later at Brotman Medical Center.
Whaley was a founding member in 1968 of Blue Cheer, best known for its recording that year of 'Summertime Blues,' which hit No. 14 on the Billboard charts.
Palmiere said services were planned for Saturday at Inglewood Park Cemetery.
