Clinton congratulates Campbell

WASHINGTON -- President Clinton Friday telephoned Kim Campbell to congratulate her on her installation as prime minister of Canada and told her he looked forward to meeting her at the Economic Summit meeting in Tokyo next month.

White House press secretary Dee Dee Myers said that Clinton and Campbell 'exchanged best wishes and looked forward to working together in Tokyo.'

She is the first woman to hold the top political position in Canada.

Campbell succeeded Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, a close friend of former President George Bush.

Mulroney recently paid a farewell call on Clinton. The United States and Canada have cooperated closely on trade and other issues at the economic summits in the past.
