Burt Reynolds files for divorce

STUART, Fla. -- Actor Burt Reynolds filed for divorce Thursday from television star Loni Anderson, saying the marriage is irretrievably broken after more than five years, court officials said.

Lawyer Noel Bobko filed the papers in Martin County Circuit Court for Reynolds, who is currently starring in the CBS-TV series 'Evening Shade.'

Martin County Clerk of Court Marsha Stiller said Anderson will be served with a summons and will have 20 days to reply.

'If it is uncontested, the divorce could be granted after the 20-day waiting period,' Stiller said. 'If it is contested, then we have no idea how long it would be.'

Under Florida no-fault laws, the reason for the divorce does not have to be specific.

'It just says that the marriage between the parties is irretrievably broken,' Stiller said.

The couple have one 4-year-old son, Quinton. The divorce papers mention only that custody and visitation rights should be appropriate, Stiller said.

Reynolds, 57, and Anderson had been frequent companions for years before they were married April 29, 1988. It was a private wedding at a chapel on the Actor's Jupiter, Fla., ranch. Anderson, who starred as the blond receptionist on the television comedy series, 'WKRP in Cincinnati,' from 1978 to 1982, had been married twice before.

Reynolds' only other marriage was in 1963 to British actress Judy Carne. They were divorced in 1965. He also had long-running romances with singer-actress Dinah Shore and actress Sally Field.
