Radio DJs suspended over Bay Bridge stunt

SAN FRANCISCO -- Radio station KSOL said Thursday it suspended two disk jockeys who staged a stunt that blocked the busy San Francisco- Oakland Bay Bridge and tied up commuter traffic for hours.

'Management was not aware of the situation in advance...management is in the process of investigating the incident,' the station said in a prepared statement.

KSOL said disc jockey 'Mancow' Muller and his sidekick Chewey Gomez have been suspended while the station investigates the incident.

In another prepared statement, 'Mancow' apologized for the stunt and called the prank 'immature.'

'I take full responsibility for what happened,' he said. 'I apologize and am truly very sorry.'

Meanwhile, San Francisco District Attorney Arlo Smith said he was awaiting a California Highway Patriol report on the incident to consider what charges will be leveled against the employees and the station.

'I may not be qualified to talk about expensive haircuts,' the bald prosecutor said, 'but if KSOL thought Bill Clinton's haircut was expensive, just wait until they find out how much this is going to cost them. I don't consider this prank funny.'

On Wednesday, five station vans went onto the busy span during the height of morning rush hour at 8 a.m. The five vehicles were stopped for eight minutes within sight of downtown San Francisco as a barber cut the hair of a man who is known as the station's mascot.

By that time, commuter traffic had already backed up for several miles and forced hundreds of people to be late for work.

The only explanation the station offered was given by 'Mancow,' who claimed the stunt was staged to protest Clinton's tying up Los Angeles International Airport last Tuesday for 56 minutes while he was given a $200 haircut by a hair stylist.
