Michael Bolton, Mariah Carey win songwriter awards

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- Pop singers Michael Bolton and Mariah Carey were honored Tuesday as songwriters of the year by Broadcast Music Inc., the world's largest licenser of songs.

The 42nd annual BMI Pop Awards were presented to the writers and publishers of the 67 most performed songs on radio and television from fall 1991 through summer 1992.

Carey and Bolton had three citations each: Carey for 'Can't Let Go,' 'Emotions' and 'Make It Happen,' and Bolton for 'Love Is A Wonderful Thing,' 'Missing You Now' and 'Steel Bars.'

'When A Man Loves A Woman,' a Motown classic rerecorded by Bolton, brought song of the year honors for its writers, Calvin Lewis and Andrew J. Wright. It was the most performed song during that period, between Bolton's rendition and earlier recordings by Percy Sledge and Bette Midler.

'Smells Like Teen Spirit,' written and performed by Nirvana, was the most performed song on college-oriented radio stations.

The most popular songs of the year included several standards played often in their original forms on oldies stations or rerecorded for pop charts or commercials.

Four songs being recognized for the first time by BMI had already topped 1 million performances: 'Save The Best For Last' by Wendy Waldman and Jon Lind, 'Can't Let Go' by Carey, 'Live For Loving You' by Gloria and Emilio Estefan and Grammy winner 'Tears In Heaven' by Eric Clapton and Will Jennings.

BMI represents 140,000 songwriters and publishers and more than 2 million titles, keeping track of radio station airplay and other uses.NEWLN: ------
