JAKARTA, Indionesia -- More than 100 people were injured and more than 100 others were jailed after a riot outside a concert by the heavy metal group Metallica, officials and news reports said Monday.
Many of the injured were hurt seriously in rioting Saturday night outside the Lebak Bulus stadium, south of the capital, before Metallica's first performance in Indonesia, the reports said.
Initial reports said the disturbances were triggered by people who tried to crash the concert without tickets, throwing stones at those who had paid up to $75 to attend the event and were waiting for the gates to open.
Local news reports said the concert organizer had not anticipated the crush and did not hire enough security guards.
But the Saturday concert went on anyway and officials said 6,000 police and army troops were standing by to keep order for the Sunday performance. No serious incidents were reported Sunday.
Up to 110 people were arrested following the rioting and were under 'intensive interrogation,' a police spokesman said Monday.
After the disturbances outside the stadium Saturday were brought under control, gangs of youths rampaged through surrounding areas, setting fire to cars and stoning homes in a luxury residential area, police said.
Indonesian media described heavy metal music as provoking anti-social behavior and quoted social affairs specialists as saying the youths who did not have tickets came to the concert in throngs regardless 'because the youth themselves were disturbed.'
One specialist, Hotman S. Siahaan, said the roots of such social unrest lie in the divisions in Indonesian society.
Several Cabinet ministers under President Suharto's admnistration expressed concern, saying they needed to reevaluate their criteria for allowing music groups and other forms of entertainment into the country.
Five years ago, dozens of people were injured in rioting by fans attempting to crash a Mick Jagger concert in Jakarta.
