Kresge heiress declared legally dead

PONTIAC, Mich. -- A judge has declared an heir to the S.S. Kresge fortune legally dead, nearly 10 years after her mysterious disappearance.

Tuesday's ruling in Oakland County Probate Court allows Carol DeArment's three grown children to collect on her estate, which could be as much as $2 million.

DeArment was 36 years old when she vanished from her home in the Detroit suburb of Troy just before midnight on Oct. 26, 1983.

Although he was never charged, DeArment's husband Donald was the key suspect in her presumed murder. He died of cancer in 1986, taking whatever secrets he may have had to the grave.

The DeArments were going through a bitter divorce when Carol DeArment vanished. She was the great-granddaughter of S.S. Kresge, founder of what is now Kmart Corp.
