PITTSBURGH -- The defending two-time Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins Monday sought to bolster the left side of their defense, obtaining Mike Ramsey from the Buffalo Sabres and reacquiring defenseman Peter Taglianetti from the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The Penguins traded left winger Bob Errey to the Sabres for Ramsey in a swap of former first-round draft choices.
The 6-3, 195-pound Ramsey was a first-round pick of the Sabres in 1979, and he played on the 1980 gold-medal-winning U.S. Olympic team. Ramsey, 32, had two goals and eight assists in 33 games this season.
Errey, 28, was Pittsburgh's first-round pick in the 1983 draft. He had eight goals and six assists in 14 games this season, playing primarily on a checking line.
The Penguins reacquired Taglianetti for a third-round draft choice in June's NHL entry draft.
Taglianetti, 29, played on Pittsburgh's Stanley Cup championship teams the past two years before being picked by Tampa Bay in this season's expansion draft.
The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Taglianetti had one goal and eight assists in 61 games this season with the Lightning. His plus-minus rating of plus-8 was the best on the team, and he was second in penalty minutes with 150.
The Penguins originally acquired Taglianetti with Larry Murphy from the Minnesota North Stars in December 1990 for Jim Johnson and Chris Dahlquist in a swap of all defensemen.
Monday's trades were announced less than one hour before the NHL's trading deadline of 3 p.m. EST.
