Surgery on Mullin's thumb successful

OAKLAND, Calif. -- All-Star forward Chris Mullin of the Golden State Warriors underwent successful surgery Monday night to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb and is expected to be sidelined for at least eight weeks.

The surgery was performed by William Green, a San Francisco hand specialist, and team physician Mal Barer at the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco.

Mullin is fourth in the NBA in scoring, averaging 25.9 points per game. He has appeared in the All-Star Game four straight years and was voted to the starting lineup this year.

Mullin, who is left-handed, had attempted to play with the thumb injury for the past month, but aggravated it Friday night in a 138-111 loss to Washington. Mullin hit just one of eight shots from the field against the Bullets and sat out the entire second half.

Mullin had scored in double figures in 301 straight games -- second only to Michael Jordan among active players -- before being held to 4 points Friday night in Washington.
