SYCAMORE, Ill. -- Even Michael Jordan might do a double take on this one.
Andy Thomas, a 6-foot-4 senior guard at Sycamore High School, scored 63 points Friday night, 48 of them coming on a state record 16 3- pointers, to carry the Spartans to a 94-59 Little Seven victory over Geneva.
Thomas, the state's leading prep scorer with a 33.6 average, connected on 16 of 29 from 3-point range. The 16 3-point field goals fell one shy of the national high school record, while the 29 attempts set a new national record, surpassing the 28 put up by David DeMarcus of Lexington Sayre, Ky., on Feb. 14, 1989.
Thomas also went 7 of 10 from the free-throw line.
The previous Illinois High School Association record for most 3- pointers made in a game was 12, set by Peoria Richwood's Frank McIntosh versus Pekin on Jan. 3, 1992. Thomas matched that in a 60-point performance against DeKalb this past November.
His 63 points, however, fell way short of the state record. The IHSA record for most points in a game is 91, set by John Battle of Chicago Cathedral against Evanston Roycemore on Jan. 31, 1979.
Through 17 games this season, Thomas has amassed 571 points.
