SMELLING THE ROSES : Sportscaster Bob Costas wants to stop the career train and get off. He is hanging it up after nine years as host of NBC's Sunday football show. 'Unless what you're doing is the greatst single passion of your life, you ought to move on before being asked to,' he told People magazine. For many years he commuted between New York for the show and St. Louis, where he lives with his wife and two children. 'I want my career to fit into my life, not the other way around,' he said. 'If the decision is to have a bigger career or a better life, then it's a better life for me. I'll miss the people and the big names late in the year but week to week, the 'NFL Live' format is restrictive and repetitious.'NEWLN:

SOMEBODY WILL MAKE MONEY FROM IT: The work of the late rock star Jimi Hendrix gets more valuable as time goes on. Entertainment Weekly magazine reports that the body of his work is being put up for sale, with a ballpark value of about $30 million. The sale is being handed by 'Are You Experienced?,' a Los Angeles production company formed in 1983 by people retained by Al Hendrix to clean up his son's estate. It is not known who will benefit from the sale. The elder Hendrix accepts only a modest payout from the estate and the two survivors of Jimi's musical group, Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell , signed away their rights in the 1970s. Attorney Leo Branton Jr., representing Experienced, won't talk about ownership. 'Who the owners are doesn't make any difference. Who are the owners of General Motors? Who are the owners of IBM?'
