The attack, believed to the work of the outlawed Irish Republican Army, took place without warning at 8 p.m. at the heavily fortified RUC security base in the village of Clogher.

Army bomb disposal experts later evacuated the area and were examining a vehicle from which the mortar was thought to have been fired.
