Nets sign Cheeks

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New Jersey Nets reached agreement on a contract with veteran point guard Maurice Cheeks Thursday for the remiander of the 1992-93 season.

To make room for Cheeks on the roster, the Nets waived center Dan O'Sullivan.

The 36-year-old Cheeks holds the National Basketball Association record for most career steals with 2,277 in 1,066 games. Cheeks, a veteran of 14 NBA seasons, has a career average of 11.3 pointsand 6.8 assists per game.

Cheeks spent the 1991-92 season with the Atlanta Hawks, who acquired him from the New York Knicks Oct. 3, 1991 for Tim McCormick. He appeared in 56 games for the Hawks and averaged 4.6 points.

Cheeks began his career with the Philadelphia 76ers in 1978 out of West Texas State and was a member of the 1983 championship team. He also played part of one season with San Antonio.
