DETROIT -- Former basketball star Spencer Haywood has settled a custody dispute with his ex-wife, international model Iman, over their 14-year-old daughter, his attorneys announced Monday.
Zulekha Haywood will continue her high school classes in Detroit while living with her father, his wife Linda, and sister Shaaqire Haywood, according to the law firm representing Spencer Haywood, Cox & Hodgman.
Iman will have reasonable visitation rights with her daughter under a schedule mutually agreed upon by Zulekha and her parents, the firm said.
Iman, who lives in Los Angeles with her husband, rock star David Bowie, had been receiving $40,000-a-year custody payments while Zulekha lived in Detroit. By mutual agreement in an out-of-court settlement, Iman will continue to receive the payments, but will repay a portion to Haywood for the support of their daughter.
'With the help of God, our arrangement will make a difference in a previously difficult situation,' said Haywood, a Detroit real estate developer. 'Now Zulekha and her mother can develop a rapport with a less hectic, firmer foundation.'
Spencer Haywood is president of the Spencer Haywood Foundation, a drug and alcohol rehabilitation and prevention organization. He also does basketball commentary for the CBS affiliate in Detroit and hosts a radio talk show.
