ALVIN, Texas -- The city of Alvin unveiled a life-size statue of its favorite citizen Nolan Ryan Tuesday, acknowledging the pitcher's sports achievements and his place in the community.
City officials said that one reason the unveiling was scheduled for Election Day was that Ryan would be voting in his hometown, where he still lives and holds business interests.
The bronze-cast statue stands 6-feet-2 tall, and including its base weighs more than 600 pounds. Ryan is portrayed in his famous pitching mode.
Noted western artist Jack Bryant of Azle, Texas, created the original sculpture, using exact measurements of Ryan's body. Photographs and sittings were instrumental in Bryant's creating the life-like character of the finished work.
Alvin is located about midway between Houston and Galveston.
