British royal couple arrive in South Korea

SEOUL, South Korea -- Prince Charles and Princess Diana arrived Monday for a four-day official visit, beginning their tour by laying a wreath to Korean War dead and helping officially open a new British embassy.

The royal couple -- who are touring South Korea at the invitation of President Roh Tae Woo -- landed at a Seoul air base 10 miles southeast of the capital, where Prime Minister Hyun Soong-jong and other Korean and British officials greeted them.

After reviewing guards at an airport ceremony, the Windsors drove to the Dongjak-dong National Cemetery in southern Seoul, where they laid a wreath to Korean War dead. They then attended the opening of a new British Embassy building in downtown Seoul.

Tuesday, the royal couple planned to visit the Korean first family.

Later, they expected to visit Gloucester Valley, 20 miles north of Seoul, to lay a wreath at a monument honoring British soldiers killed in the 1950-53 Korean War.

Tuesday evening, the couple planned to attend a dinner hosted by President Roh and his wife.

On Wednesday, Charles is expected to open a 'Britain for Korea' fair, join business leaders at two seminars, and attend a National Wool Textile Exports Exhibition.

Diana plans to visits the Salvation Army and a British school in Seoul.

In the evening, the couple are to attend a Scottish ballet performance.

The Windsores are scheduled to wind up Korean visit Thursday with visits to the tourist site Kyongju, then the Ulsan industrial complex in southeast Korea.
