South Carolina 24, No. 15 Tennessee

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Tony Cates scored on a 3-yard pass from freshman Steve Taneyhill with 6:15 left Saturday to snap a tie and South Carolina held on for a 24-23 upset victory over No. 15 Tennessee.

The Gamecocks, who raised their record to 3-5 and 3-4 in the Southeastern Conference East Division, tied the score four seconds into the final quarter on a 38-yard field goal by Marty Simpson.

The Volunteers (5-3, 3-3) had a chance to win the game with 1:28 left after getting within one when Mose Phillips took a short pass from Heath Shuler and ran 36 yards for the score.

Tennessee went for the win, but after James Stewart caught a pass in the flat he was tackled short of the goal line by linebacker Hank Campbell.

Shuler completed 20 of 28 passes for 296 yards. Brandon Bennett ran 22 times for 122 yards for South Carolina.

Tennessee outgained South Carolina, 482 yards to 338, but the Volunteers lost two fumbles and the Gamecocks played turnover-free ball.
