Tampa Bay takes Creighton in NHL waiver draft

MONTREAL -- Center Adam Creighton, a 21-goal scorer with the Chicago Blackhawks and New York Islanders last season, was the top pick by the expansion Tampa Bay Lightning Sunday in the NHL waiver draft.

Right wing Dave Christian, a 12-year veteran who has scored at least 20 goals in eight of his last nine seasons, was picked in the second round by Chicago.

Christian, a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic team, had 20 goals and 44 points with St. Louis last season.

The San Jose Sharks picked left wing Yvon Corriveau and center Igor Larionov. Larionov, who scored 21 goals for Vancouver last season, is a free agent playing in Europe this season.

The Philadelphia Flyers also had two selections, picking up hard- hitting left wing Doug Evans from Boston and Quebec defenseman Shawn Cronin, who racked up 271 penalty minutes in 65 games with Winnipeg last season.

Defenseman Norm MacIver, formerly of Edmonton, was taken in the first round by the expansion Ottawa Senators. Calgary had the other first- round pick and chose defenseman Chris Dahlquist from Minnesota.

The draft ended when all 24 teams passed in the third round.
