Another body found near sex-torture chamber

SAN ANDREAS, Calif. -- Investigators said Friday another body has been found near the sex-torture dungeon where mass murder suspect Charles Ng is accused of conducting his killing spree during the mid- 1980s.

The remains of Charles Gunnar, of Morgan Hill, who disappeared in 1982, was unearthed earlier this week near Wilseyville in California's Mother Lode country.

Gunnar was the best friend of Ng's alleged accomplice, survivalist Leonard Lake, who owned the secluded cabin. Investigators have found more than 40 pounds of charred human bones in graves near the cabin.

Ng, 31, is charged with killing 11 people in the sex-torture chamber. A 12th victim was killed in San Francisco.

Investigators accuse Ng, a former Marine and martial arts expert, of helping Lake lure victims to the cabin to be held as sex slaves and killed.

The killings came to light in 1985 after officers arrested Lake for shoplifting. When police began questioning him, Lake swallowed a cyanide capsule, but named Ng before he died.

Lake's videotapes of tortured women begging for mercy led detectives to the Wilseyville cabin.

Ng fled to Canada, where he soon was arrested for another crime. He was imprisoned there until September 1991, when he was returned to California after an extradition battle.

A Calaveras County Justice Court judge rejected a defense bid Friday to exclude the news media and public from Ng's preliminary hearing.

The hearing to determine if there is enough evidence to have Ng stand trial is scheduled Oct. 6.
