Gehrig jersey sold for record $363,000

SAN FRANCISCO -- A New York Yankees jersey once worn by Lou Gehrig during a game in the 1927 season has been sold for a record $363, 000, an auction house announced Thursday.

The previous record price for a baseball uniform was $220,000 paid in 1991 for a 1938 Gehrig road jersey.

Earlier this year, a Jimmy Foxx road jersey also sold at auction for $220,000.

'This new record price is another indication of the growth, strength, and depth of the market for authentic, vintage sports memorabilia,' said Dr. Jerome Zuckerman, president and CEO of Sports Heroes Inc., which held the Wednesday night auction along with the San Francisco-based Richard Wolffers Inc.

Zuckerman said that Sports Heroes also sold at the auction a 1917 'Shoeless' Joe Jackson autographed baseball for $55,000.
