Spurs' Cummings may miss next season

SAN ANTONIO -- Terry Cummings of the San Antonio Spurs may miss all of next season because of a knee injury suffered during a pickup game, the team confirmed Thursday.

An earlier report by the San Antonio Express-News, said that Cummings, an 11-year veteran, had torn two ligaments in his right knee in Chicago Monday when a player fell on him.

Sources had told the paper that Cummings was seen on crutches Tuesday night in San Antonio International Airport and team president Bob Bass confirmed Wednesday night the player was injured and underwent an MRI.

The Spurs said Cummings' knee would be immobilized for about a month to allow the torn medial collateral ligament to heal, then he'll undergo reconstructive surgery for the torn anterior cruciate ligament.

It is estimated the leg will be in a cast for six to eight weeks before any rehabilitation can start.

Cummings, who missed 11 games last season with a fractured rib, averaged 17.3 points and 9 rebounds a game.
