This year's awards show was moved from the Universal Amphitheatre to UCLA's Pauley Pavilion where technicians 'will have the production capability to expand the musical line-up,' said Doug Herzog, MTV vice president of programming.

Live performances are scheduled by U2, who will be shown live via satellite from Detroit where the Irish band is on tour, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, En Vogue and Nirvana.

'This show will be wall-to-wall music,' Herzog said. 'The move to Pauley Pavilion has given us the flexibility we need to offer our audience the best and most music possible.'

Past MTV host Arsenio Hall will be replaced this year by 'Saturday Night Live' comedian Dana Carvey.

Carvey announced the MTV finalists Tuesday at a news conference at La Boheme restaurant in West Hollywood. He was joined by En Vogue divas Dawn Robinson, Terry Ellis, Cindy Herron and Maxine Jones and Anthony Kiedis and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Twenty awards will be presented during the ceremony for excellence in video music. More than 700 members of the music industry will cast their ballots for the nominees, MTV spokeswoman Rachel McCallister said.

The MTV awards finalists for the Best Video of the Year include 'Let's Get Rocked' by Def Leppard; 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' by Nirvana; 'Under the Bridge' by the Red Hot Chili Peppers and 'Right Now' by Van Halen.
