Jazz acquire Humphries in 5-player deal

SALT LAKE CITY -- The Utah Jazz traded forward Blue Edwards, guard Eric Murdock and their first-round draft pick Wednesday to the Milwaukee Bucks for guard Jay Humphries and forward Larry Krystkowiak.

The trade gave the Bucks the eighth pick, their own, and Utah's 23rd selection in Wednesday night's NBA draft.

The Jazz had been looking to acquire a back-up point guard for Olympian John Stockton.

Humphries, 29, averaged 14 points and led the Bucks in assists with a 6.6 average in 71 games last season. He was selected as the 13th pick of the 1984 draft by Phoenix, where he played 3 seasons and was indicted in a drug investigation centering around the Suns in 1987.

Humphries pleaded guilty to one count of marijuana possession in the case, which was expunged from his record after drug counseling and community service. He was traded to Milwaukee in February 1988 for guard Craig Hodges and a draft pick.

Krystkowiak, 27, averaged nine points a game as a spot starter and was second on the Bucks in rebounds with a 5.4 average over 79 games last season. He came to Milwaukee in a trade with San Antonio in 1987, though he missed the entire 1990-91 season because of torn ligaments in his left knee.

Edwards, 26, who was a starter most of last season, averaged 12.6 points while playing in all but one game in the 1991-92 campaign. He was Utah's first-round draft pick in the 1989 draft, the 21st overall.

Murdock, 23, received little playing time as a rookie last season, averaging 4.1 points in 50 games. He was Utah's first-round selection in last year's draft, also the 21st pick. At Providence College, Murdock became the NCAA's all-time leader in steals with 376.
