Steeb ousts Sampras in Monte Carlo

MONTE CARLO, Monaco -- Carl-Uwe Steeb of Germany bolted to strong start Tuesday and upset Pete Sampras 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the Monte Carlo Open.

Sampras, the No. 2 seed and the world's fourth-ranked player, trailed 5-0 after just 19 minutes.

The American tried to recover, but Steeb, ranked No. 40 in the world, kept his grip. He took the first set 6-3 and broke at 4-4 in the second before serving out for the match.

'I couldn't get anything going,' Sampras said. 'He played well and got off to a good start. I just made too many errors.'

In other matches, Arnaud Boetsch of France defeated former champion Alberto Mancini of Argentina 7-5, 7-6; Magnus Larsson of Sweden beat Petr Korda of Czechoslovakia 6-3, 6-3; and hard-serving Marc Rosset of Switzerland downed Richard Krajicek of Holland 6-2, 6-4.
