Three dead, homes and school damaged in rebel attack

LIMA, Peru -- Suspected Maoist rebels detonated a car bomb Monday at a police outpost near Lima's principal port, El Callao, killing at least three people, injuring 15 and badly damaging nearby homes and a school, police said.

Rescue workers were searching for more dead and injured in the rubble caused by the blast, which was attributed to Shining Path rebels whose daily string of killings has not ceased since democracy was suspended April 5.

Police said the car bomb contained about 130 pounds of dynamite and the early morning blast damaged dozens of homes and cars nearby, as well as a parochial school. The school was empty at the time.

At least one policeman and two civilians were killed in the explosion that rocked the Bellavista area, a community adjoining the Peruvian capital and the site of Peru's most important port.
