Mansell wins third straight race

SAO PAULO, Brazil -- Nigel Mansell of Britain won his third straight Formula One race Sunday, cruising to an easy victory in the Brazilian Grand Prix over teammate Ricardo Patrese of Italy.

Mansell averaged 118.191 mph and finished 29.33 seconds ahead of Patrese for his 24th career Grand Prix victory.

The two have started on the front row in each race this season and have finished 1-2 in all three events.

Patrese grabbed the lead on the opening lap. Both drivers pitted on lap 31 and Patrese's slower time in the pits allowed Mansell to move in front. He led the rest of the way.

Michael Schumacher of Germany was third, followed by Jean Alesi of France and Ivan Capelli of Italy. Brazil's Ayrton Senna, the defending champion and two-time world champion, dropped out after just 17 laps because of motor failure. Senna's teammate, Austria's Gerhard Berger, left after just four laps, also with an engine problem.

Mansell won earlier this year in South Africa and Mexico. He now has 30 points in the overall standings, widening his lead over Patrese, who has 18.

Mansell set a qualifying record in winning the pole Saturday. He won despite driving with sore legs, the result of a crash into a wall at the end of Saturday's practice.
