The plane lost the two engines on its right wing as well as the wing's rear flap. In addition, a fire was reported to have broken aboard the aircraft, which was on a flight from Kano, Nigeria, to Luxembourg.

The plane landed at the Istres military base near Marseilles. Commander Dominique Foubet of the base said emergency crews immediately put out the fire on board after the aircraft landed.

Emergency personnel were checking for the two missing engines in a wide area around the villages of Saint-Paul-Trois-Chateaux, Valreas, Carpentras, Isle-sur-Sorgue and Orange.
