Directors Guild of America TV nominees announced

HOLLYWOOD -- CBS struck gold Sunday in Directors Guild of America awards, earning seven nominations, including recognition for its acclaimed comedies 'Northern Exposure' and 'Murphy Brown.'

The guild announced nominees in six categories of television programming for 1991. The awards will be handed out at the 44th annual Directors Guild banquet March 14, which will be held simultaneously in New York and Beverly Hills, Calif.

In the best comedy series category, Peter Bonerz was nominated for the 'Murphy Brown' episode 'Uh Oh, Part 2.' Other nominees were James Burrows for the NBC series 'Cheers' episode 'Days of Wine and Neurosis,' and David Steinberg for NBC's 'Seinfeld' episode 'The Tape.'

In the nighttime dramatic series category, 'Northern Exposure' garnered two of the three nominations. James Hayman was cited for the 'Jules and Joel' episode, while Stuart Margolin was nominated for the installment, 'Goodbye to All That.'

The third drama nominee was Eric Laneuville for NBC's 'I'll Fly Away.' The winning episode was titled: 'All God's Children.'

In the daytime drama show category, the CBS Schoolbreak Special, 'Lies of the Heart' earned director Barra Grant a nomination. Other nominees were Roy Campanella II for the PBS 'Wonderworks' episode 'Brother Future,' and Consuelo Gonzalez for 'In the Shadow of Love,' which was shown on both PBS and ABC.

CBS swept all three nominations in the daytime serials category, with Heather Hill and the duo of Randy Robbins and Mike Denney winning for episodes of 'The Young and the Restless.' An episode of 'The Bold and the Beautiful' directed by Michael Stich grabbed the third nomination.

In the documentary/actuality category, the nominees were: Fax Bahr, Eleanor Coppola and George Hickenlooper for the Showtime documentary 'Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse;' Peter Gelb for the PBS special: 'Soldiers of Music: Rostorpovitch Returns to Russia;' and Alan Raymond for the HBO special 'Doing Time: Life Inside the Big House.'

In the dramatic specials category, the nominees were: Joshua Brand for the 'I'll Fly Away' pilot; Brian Gibson for the HBO movie 'The Josephine Baker Story;' and Stephen Gyllenhaal for the Showtime special 'Paris Trout.'
