Turner to launch 24-hour cartoon network

ATLANTA -- Turner Broadcasting System Inc. announced plans Tuesday to launch a 24-hour cartoon network, using the cartoons in the company's library and the newly acquired Hanna-Barbera library.

The Cartoon Network will begin broadcasting Oct. 1, said R.E. 'Ted' Turner, chairman of Turner Broadcasting.

'A cartoon network is the natural extension of our recently acquired interest in the Hanna-Barbera library, much as Turner Network Television and Turner Network Television Latin America have proven to be ideal vehicles for the MGM movie library,' said Turner.

Betty Cohen was named executive vice president of the Cartoon Network. Cohen has been vice president of Turner Network Television since January, 1991.

Turner recently launched the Checkout Channel, a television news service operating a supermaket checkout lines.
