McCarthy elected General Partner of Yankees

NEW YORK -- Attorney Daniel R. McCarthy was elected General Partner of the New York Yankees in a vote Tuesday by the partners of the club. McCarthy will replace Robert Nederlander, whose resignation became official Tuesday.

Nederlander will remain a limited partner.

McCarthy is the senior partner of the law firm of McCarthy, Lebit, Crystal & Haiman, Co., L.P.A., and is well renowned in tax and business law. McCarthy played a hand in the purchase of the club back in 1973 from CBS, and has been a silent partner ever since.

'I am honored to serve as Managing General Partner of the New York Yankees and am grateful for the support of my fellow partners,' said McCarthy.

Ironically, the news of McCarthy comes in the midst of majority owner George Steinbrenner's bid to be re-nominated for the post, a position he was forced to give up in a compromise with Baseball Commissioner Fay Vincent.

A New Jersey newspaper reported several days ago that Steinbrenner would petition Vincent for re-instatement. However, Vincent has maintained that Steinbrenner must drop any lawsuits stemming from his suspension and must pick up baseball's legal fees in the ongoing court battles before any consideration would be given concerning his re- instatement.
