Higgins out with broken wrist

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Golden State Warriors forward Rod Higgins was placed on injured reserve Friday with a broken wrist that will require surgery and could sideline the veteran for the remainder of the season.

Higgins, the fourth-leading scorer on the team, suffered a fracture to his navicular bone in the wrist Thursday night during the Warriors' 99-96 loss to the Houston Rockets.

He collided with Matt Bullard in the second quarter of the game.

Higgins, 31, will undergo surgery next week and will be in a cast for eight weeks. Higgins is not expected back for at least three months.

Higgins was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in the second round of the 1982 draft. During the 1985-86 season, he became the only player ever to play for four teams in one season. He went full circle during the season. After being waived by the Bulls, he played for Seattle, San Antonio and New Jersey, before getting re-signed by the Bulls later in the year.

The 10-year NBA veteran averaged 11.5 points in 19 games for the Warriors this season. He is tied with Tim Hardaway for the team lead with 29 3-pointers.

Replacing Higgins in the roster will be rookie forward Chris Gatling, who has missed three weeks with a strained left shoulder and a sprained left ankle. Gatling, one of three Warrior first-round picks this season, averaged 3.7 points in limited action this year.
