Nicole Shrivers, 18, is in fair condition and both are in Humana Hospital.

Police say Turner has been distraught because Shrivers ended their relationship and was seeing someone else. They got a mental-inquest warrant about nine hours before the stabbing.

According to Louisville police, Turner broke into Shrivers' house, stabbed her in the chest and arms, then stabbed himself in the heart. He fled the scene but collapsed about 50 feet away. He initially was in critical condition and Shrivers in stable condition.

'After Mr. Turner is released from the hospital he will be taken into custody and could be taken into a detention center,' Jefferson County Police spokesman Rick Jones said.

The police investigation disclosed that the couple's relationship had a history of abuse and Turners struggled to deal with the death of their son in May, 1990, of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Their second son is 3 months old.
