Bread riot in Armenian capital

MOSCOW -- A bread riot erupted at a bakery in the Armenian capital of Yerevan in an apparent surge of panic buying, Soviet news agencies reported Thursday.

A crowd of Yerevan residents attacked a local bread factory Wednesday, stealing and trampling bread underfoot and damaging some equipment, the Soviet news agency Tass reported.

Police broke up the crowd and arrested two men for hooliganism.

The riot erupted even though official statistics indicated bread production in the city was above the level of the previous year, Tass said.
