MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Larry Porter rushed for 167 yards and one touchdown and Xavier Crawford scored with 1:30 to play Saturday night, boosting Memphis State past Arkansas State 31-21.
Crawford scored on a 1-yard, 4th-and-goal play with 90 seconds left in the game to seal the win for the Tigers, 2-2.
Arkansas State quarterback Roy Johnson tried to rally the Indians, 0- 4, but Herb Kendall intercepted a Johnson pass at the Memphis State 1 yard line with :02 left.
Johnson scored two touchdowns and accounted for 352 yards in total offense, passing for 214 yards and rushing for 138 more. He completed 14 of 27 passes with two interceptions and one touchdown, a 58-yarder to Blake Dennison on the game's second play.
Porter scored on a 14-yard run in the first quarter to tie the game at 7 all, and freshman Barry Dillard scored on a 29-yard block punt return to put the Tigers up 14-7.
A Memphis State drive early in the second quarter stalled when Crawford fumbled the ball at the Arkansas State 2 yard line. The Indians then executed a 16-play, 98-yard drive capped by Johnson's second TD, a 2-yard run on fourth and goal.
Joe Allison gave Memphis State a 17-14 halftime lead on a 33-yard field goal with :32 left in the first half.
Leon Bosby, who rushed for 60 yards on the night, ran 1 yard for a score in the third quarter to put Memphis State ahead 24-14. Johnson came back with a 6-yard TD run to pull Arkansas to within 3 at 24-21.
