BOSTON -- The Oakland Athletics, seeking a veteran arm to bolster their starting rotation for the pennant drive, acquired pitcher Ron Darling from the Montreal Expos late Wednesday night for two minor league pitchers.
Darling, who the Expos acquired on July 15 from the New York Mets for reliever Tim Burke,was dealt to the A's in exchange for Russ Cormier, a 23-year-old right-hander in his third professional season, and Matt Grott, 23, a left-hander also in his third professional season.
Darling was 5-6 for the Mets and went 0-2 in three starts for Montreal with a combined ERA 4.37. The 30-year-old Darling has a career record of 99-72.
Cormier started the season at Double-A Huntsville and went 3-4 with a 5.64 ERA before he was sent to Class A Modesto in June. Grott was 2-9 with a 5.15 ERA in 42 relief appearances for Huntsville.
