San Antonio 130, Golden State 121

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Willie Anderson scored 38 points and David Robinson and Rod Strickland added 30 each Thursday night to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a 130-121 win over Golden State in the first game of their Western Conference playoff series.

The Spurs led 57-53 at intermission and went on a 22-9 run to open the third period and take a 79-62 lead at the 4:57 mark. The Spurs outscored Golden State 36-19 in the third period and took a 93-72 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Tim Hardaway and Chris Mullin led a Warrior spurt to cut the lead to 105-98 with 5:20 left in the game, but Robinson scored two straight baskets for a 118-108 lead with 1:31 remaining. Sean Elliott scored seven late points to help the Spurs clinch the victory.

Golden State opened a 7-point lead in the second period before Anderson warmed up, eventually scoring 19 points in the first half as San Antonio took a 57-53 lead at intermission. Anderson hit 18 of 25 shots from the field to produce a career high. Strickland's 30 points was also a career high.

San Antonio scored the first eight points of the third quarter and had another eight-point surge late in the period.

Mullin and Richmond both scored 29 to lead the Warriors, who scored 49 points in the final quarter. Tim Hardaway had 19.

Robinson, who was in two brief altercations in the opening period with Alton Lister and Jim Petersen pulled down 13 rebounds and blocked eight shots. Robinson was hit with his third foul with 7:11 in the second quarter and sat out the rest of the half with eight points.

Golden State, needing to hit a high percentage from the field to contend in this series, made 44 percent of its field goal tries to 55 percent for the Spurs. San Antonio also outrebounded the Warriors, 56- 38.
