Cowboys' Nate Newton arrested at dogfight

LIBERTY CITY, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys guard Nate Newton was among 18 people arrested Saturday at an illegal dogfight in a wooded area of East Texas, officers said.

Gregg County sheriff's deputies said they were tipped that the dogfight was planned.

Twenty or more people ran into nearby woods in an attempt to escape when officers approached at about 10:30 a.m., Lt. Ken Hartley said. Most of them eventually surrendered.

Hartley said Newton, 29, who lives in the Dallas suburb of Coppell, was arrested near the fight arena. He was released on $1,200 bond after his arrest on charges of evading arrest and illegal dogfighting.

Hartley said deputies recovered four pit bull terriers that had allegedly been used in a dogfight. Two of the animals were so badly injured they might have to be destroyed.
