DALLAS -- David Klingler and Darren Lewis, two of college football's offensive stars in 1990, headed the United Press International all-Southwest Conference football team announced Saturday.

Klingler threw for 4,424 yards and an NCAA record 54 touchdowns. He led the country in total offense and guided the Cougars to a 10-1 record. Klingler was also named offensive player of the year in the SWC.

Texas defensive back Stanley Richard was selected the league's defensive player of the year, David McWilliams was named coach of the year for guiding the Longhorns to the league title and freshman running back Butch Hadnot was chosen newcomer of the year.

Lewis became the SWC's all-time leading career rusher and was third in the country this season with 1,691 yards. Lewis was joined in the offensive backfield by surprising Rice running back Trevor Cobb, who became the first 1,000-yard rusher in his school's history.

The first-team wide receivers were TCU sophomore Stephen Shipley and Houston senior Manny Hazard. Kelly Blackwell, one of several talented receivers at TCU this year, filled the tight end spot.

The offensive line was made up of Texas' Stan Thomas, TCU's Mike Sullivan, Houston's Jason Jessup and Texas A&M's Mike Arthur and Matt McCall.

Mike Pollack of Texas, who had a 42.9-yard average this season, was chosen as the first-team punter.

Five members of Texas' SWC leading defense made the first team including linemen Shane Dronett and James Patton. They were joined in the defensive line by Baylor's Santana Dotson and Robin Jones.

Texas' Brian Jones, Texas A&M's William Thomas and Rice's O.J. Brigance were the first-team linebackers and the defensive backfield was made up of Richard, Kevin Smith of Texas A&M, Mike Welch of Baylor and Lance Gunn of Texas. Alex Waits of Texas was chosen first-team punter.

The only repeaters from the 1989 all-SWC team were Hazard at wide receiver and Thomas at linebacker.

Both a first-team offense and defense have been selected since 1964 and this marks the first time since then that Arkansas has not placed at least one player on either squad. The Razorbacks' only first-team member in 1980, however, was punter Steve Cox.
