IOWA CITY,Iowa -- Freshman guard Kevin Smith scored 17 points and made three steals off the bench to lead Iowa to an 80-59 victory Friday night over Colgate in the first round of the Amana-Hawkeye Classic.
Creighton beat Texas-San Antonio 93-47 in the other semifinal game and will play Iowa for the classic championship on Saturday.
Iowa, 3-1, ran off the first eight points but Colgate, 0-2, scored 12 of the next 15 to take a 12-11 lead with 10:37 remaining in the first half. Devin Hughes' jumper with 2:32 remaining gave Colgate a 24-17 lead.
Iowa scored the first nine points of the second half, including a three-point field goal by Val Barnes, to lead 32-26. The Hawkeyes never relinquished the lead, although Colgate pulled within 41-39 with 13:35 left on Jonathon Stone's scored.
'Colgate played sharp, aggressive and disrupted us in a lot of ways, ' Iowa Coach Tom Davis said.
'In the first half we were too relaxed,' Smith said. 'We came out flat. But in the second half, 'Coach' just told us to go out and play.'
In the opener, Bob Harstad set a Carver-Hawkeye Arena record, hitting 13 of 13 from the field, and a Classic record with 12 free throws, to lead Creighton. Harstad finished with 38 points.
