Pioneer acquires rights to Carolco films

TOKYO -- Pioneer Electronic Corp. announced Tuesday it has acquired all rights in Japan for the films to be produced by major U.S. film producer Carolco Pictures Inc.

The Tokyo-based leading audio-visual equipment maker said the acquisition is based on an agreement signed last July between Carolco Pictures and Pioneer LDCA, Inc., Pioneer's wholly owned U.S. subsidiary which owns about 10 percent equity in the U.S. firm.

As the initial outcome of the agreement, Pioneer acquired all rights in Japan for seven titles, including 'Terminator 2,' and 'the Doors,' directed by Oliver Stone, the company said.

The company said it was granted rights for all films to be produced by Carolco Pictures in the future as well as those which are currently under production.

The company has already obtained worldwide video-gramme rights of Carolco Films on laser discs.

Pioneer said the acquisition of all rights of Carolco films in Japan will help to expand its software business.

The first seven films produced by Carolco will be distributed to theaters in Japan by Toho-Towa Corp., the company said.
