Leafs send Olczyk to Jets in multi-player trade

TORONTO -- The befuddled Toronto Maple Leafs made their third trade in two days Saturday, sending center Ed Olczyk and right winger Mark Osborne to the Winnipeg Jets for defenseman Dave Ellett and left winger Paul Fenton.

The 2-15-1 Maple Leafs one day earlier acquired center Mike Krushelnyski from the Los Angeles Kings for center John McIntyre, and left winger Rob Cimetta from the Boston Bruins for defenseman Steve Bancroft.

Olczyk was the youngest member of the 1984 U.S. Olympic Team, playing at Sarajevo, Yugoslavia, at the age of 16.

He scored at least 32 goals in each of his three full seasons with Toronto. The 24-year-old spent three years playing in his native Chicago before the Blackhawks traded him before the 1987-88 season.

That year, he reached his career high of 42 goals for Toronto. In 1988-89, Olczyk marked his career-high point total with 90 on 38 goals and 52 assists.

Last season, Olczyk scored 32 goals with 56 assists.

So far this year, however, he has four goals and 10 assits.

Osborne, who leaves his hometown, was in his fourth year with the Maple Leafs, coming from the New York Rangers. The 29-year-old had a career-high 73 points last year, compiling 23 goals and 50 assists.

Osborne started his career with the Detroit Red Wings in 1981-82, reaching his career-high of 26 goals and getting traded to New York.

Ellett made the 1988-89 All-Star Team and that season scored a career-high 22 goals. The 26-year-old had 17 goals and 29 assists last year. Ellett was in his seventh year with the Jets and had four goals and eight assists in 17 games.

Fenton scored a career-high 32 goals last season. The 30-year-old will be playing for his fifth NHL team after stints with Hartford, the Rangers, Los Angeles and Winnipeg. He had four goals and four assists this season.
