MANAGUA, Nicaragua -- The People's Republic of China broke off diplomatic relations with Nicaragua Tuesday, after Managua re- established ties with Taiwan, officials said.
A Foreign Ministry spokesman said China unilaterally cut ties with Nicaragua because it would not accept the country's renewed friendship with Taiwan.
The Chinese Embassy would not immediately comment.
The former Sandinista government had developed strong ties with China, distancing itself from Taiwan. But the U.S.-backed government of Violeta Chamorro has radically altered the country's foreign policy, renewing ties with anti-communist governments.
Nicaragua was informed of the break in relations during a meeting between Chinese officials in Managua and Foreign Minister Enrique Dreyfus, the spokesman said.
