Spurs 110, Lakers 99

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Terry Cummings scored 13 of his 31 points in the final four minutes Saturday to halt Los Angeles' comeback bid and bring the San Antonio Spurs a season opening 110-99 victory over the Lakers.

The setback spoiled the debut of Mike Dunleavy, who succeeds the retired Pat Riley as head coach of the Lakers.

Center David Robinson contributed 25 points, seven rebounds and six blocked shots while Sean Elliott added 20 for the Spurs, but it was Cummings' clutch performance that secured the victory.

Los Angeles, after holding a 60-54 halftime lead, fell victim to a 22-6 San Antonio run early in the second half and the Spurs still held an 11-point lead with eight minutes to play.

The Lakers, however, rallied on the 35-point performance of James Worthy to cut their deficit to 92-89 with four minutes left.

Cummings then scored 13 of San Antonio's next 16 points, including a three-point play with 2:20 left that boosted the Spurs in front by six.

It marked the second straight year the Spurs had beaten the Lakers at home to start the season. Sam Perkins, playing his first game with Los Angeles after signing as a free agent, scored 22.
