DENVER -- The Adolph Coors Co. has agreed to pay a civil penalty of $450,000 to settle water pollution violations dating back more than a decade, the state Health Department said Tuesday.
The department had cited the brewing company June 19 for discharging without a permit into Clear Creek and Kinney Run, which flow near the brewery, from three springs contaminated with solvents.
Coors also had been cited for failure to notify the state when these three springs and another contaminated spring were pumped into the company's wastewater treatment plant.
The violations occurred as long ago as the late 1970s, the agency said.
The settlement announced Tuesday includes payment of $150,000 in cash, an additional deferred $50,000 civil penalty and contributions to the Colorado Center for Environmental Management and a bike path right- of-way to the Jefferson County Open Space Program.
