Chelios pleads innocent to misdemeanor charges

MADISON, Wis. -- Innocent pleas were entered Tuesday for Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Chris Chelios, charged with resisting arrest and urinating on a downtown street.

Chelios, who played at the University of Wisconsin, did not appear at the brief arraignment in Dane County Circuit Court on two misdemeanor charges stemming from the incident.

According to a criminal complaint, Chelios continually berated the arresting officer and made threats to get even with him. The complaint also said Chelios told the officer 'you'll be history you (expletive)' while held at the Madison Police Department.

Chelios was bailed out of jail after his arrest last week. He was traded from the Montreal Canadiens to the Blackhawks the day after his arrest.

Also arrested in the incident were Calgary Flames defenseman Gary Suter and former Wisconsin player Dave Lundeen. Suter, who also played for the Badgers, allegedly punched a policeman while Lundeen was alleged to have taken a swing at a federal officer.

Suter was charged with felony battery to a police offcer while Lundeen was charged with attempted battery to a police officer. They appeared in court last week.

Police reports said the incident began when two undercover drug investigators spotted Chelios urinating on the sidewalk near Lundeen's bar, which he runs.
